Storyline:
SON OF RAMBOW is the name of the home movie made by two little boys with a big video camera and even bigger ambitions. Set on a long English summer in the early 80's, SON OF RAMBOW is a comedy about friendship, faith and the tough business of growing up. We see the story through the eyes of Will, the eldest son of a fatherless Plymouth Brethren family. The Brethren regard themselves as God's 'chosen ones' and their strict moral code means that Will has never been allowed to mix with the other 'worldlies,' listen to music or watch TV, until he finds himself caught up in the extraordinary world of Lee Carter, the school terror and maker of bizarre home movies. Carter exposes Will to a pirate copy of Rambo: First Blood and from that moment Will's mind is blown wide open and he's easily convinced to be the stuntman in Lee Carters' diabolical home movie...

I have been waiting for this movie & caught it on the first weekend it was released in my city --- I was NOT disappointed --- wonderfully humorous with poignant moments --- two fresh kid actors were great!!

I dug this movie. Yes it was mostly predictable and cliche but it was a very sweet, very funny movie which my brother and I both enjoyed very much. It was a well spent amount of money and time at the theater to see this one.

This is a very enjoyable film - the two young boy actors did a splendid job with their role. Thoroughly entertaining. Every person's inner-child will enjoy watching this film.

I expected this movie to be cute based upon the trailers, but it exceeded my expectations. Newcomers Bill Milner and Will Poulter were sweet, adorable, and endearing as two young boys who become unlikely friends in the greatest of all decades-the 80s, of course. Milner's character, Will Proudfoot, is being raised in a family that belongs to an Amish-type religion that doesn't allow him to watch TV or movies. So, when Poulter's "Lee Carter" exposes his new friend to the movie "Rambo," Will's imagination-which had already been established as being VERY active-goes wild. The two boys proceed to make a sequel to Rambo-"Son of Rambow"-which produces the best and funniest part of the movie: a sequence where the boys are filming a number of action/stunt scenes that had me laughing out loud-and hysterically so. The movie did take a dramatic turn near the end of the film, but it was not too heavy, and it was well done. Without question, I recommend a trip to the theater for this one!

MOVIES REVIEWER

I just saw the press screening for this unpretentious coming-of-age adolescent bonding British movie set against Rambo:First Blood as it's backdrop that coherently gelled the movie together. 'Son Of Rambow' pokes fun and satirizes Rambo/Stallone; bullies/brute force; posses/entourages; interfering demanding religious establishment; the French; big hair/loud wardrobe/music of the 80s, etc. Some scenes were hilarious - balancing the stark reality of religious oppression/suppression - a theme boldly explored in the movie. The message here seems to vocalize that childhood is a precious fleeting moment filled with wonders, discovery, and creativity - and that children should be allowed to enjoy those years and grow up at their own pace. Thinly veiled, the movie commented that the French did not have a monopoly on taste, dance, culture, and acting. Despite the social/cultural satires, this movie is a breeze to watch - and kids should enjoy it as well. Recommended. Grade: B-
